Durant High School Key Club brings sweet treats to Kiwanis Club

Durant Kiwanis Club hosted the annual DHS Key Club Bake Sale just in time for Valentine’s Day. Key Club bakers tempted Kiwanis members into friendly bidding wars for delicious goods. Sweet treats varied from festive cakes, pies, cupcakes, cookies, and brownies to unique wrapped candy baskets. All proceeds (more than $3,000) help fund Key Club’s trip to LEDCON (Leadership, Education, District Conference) held this year in Denton, Texas, during April 10-13, 2025. Key Club members of the Texas-Oklahoma district benefit from forums focused on specific officer roles and life skills.

The conference key note speaker will be Genai Walker, Ms. Walker graduated cum laude from the University of Central Arkansas after earning numerous academic and athletic scholarships. She pursued a career playing in the WNBA and internationally. Today Walker is a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley.

Durant Key Club members are also showing early leadership skills. Kiwanis Durant High School Senior of the Month is Jozelynn Coffey. She maintains a 3.8 GPA while also taking concurrent classes at Murray State College. She has been a Key Club member since her freshman year and serves this year as club secretary. She represented Key Club as a Homecoming Queen candidate.

Other school activities include acting Senior Class Reporter for Student Council, competing for six years in cross country track and field, studying in Advance Placement Literature classes, assisting with Special Olympics, and being involved in National Honor Society and FCCLA.

Coffey still has time for community service by acting as a student leader and mentor at Durant Baptist Church. She believes her involvement in clubs, organizations and church help her develop as a leader.

After graduation, she plans to attend a university to major in zoology and environmental science. Her mission is “to make our world better through studying the environment and providing solutions to environmental issues.”

Coffey was presented a gift card and a certificate. She will also be considered for Kiwanis Durant High School Senior of the Year and a $1,000 scholarship. Joining her at the ceremony were her parents, Dan and Lesley Coffey, Key Club sponsor Alicia Farley, and DHS counselor Kelly Kane.

Kiwanis Club meets weekly at noon at Roma Italian Restaurant. Attend a meeting to see how to help the children of the world.
