Durant Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 113 hosted a fish fry benefit on Friday for Durant Police Department Capt. Brian Chavez at the Durant Elks Lodge.
Chavez has served the community for years, and he needs support because he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer. Many attended the fish fry and silent auction to support Chavez.
He is currently undergoing chemotherapy and facing a tough road ahead. All proceeds from the benefit will directly help with medical expenses and travel related to his treatment.
Chavez is a member of Durant First Baptist Church and he serves each Sunday as the congregation’s off-duty police officer who works with the FBC safety team each week and he is a greeter.
Durant City Manager Pam Polk attended the benefit.
“Such a wonderful evening,” Polk said, in a social media comment. “What a great, giving community we live in.”
