A pair of pivotal district wins over Del City and Shawnee last week pushed the Durant Lady Lions squarely into the all-important second slot in the District 5A-3 standings.
The Lady Lions sandwiched the vital victories (17-4 over Del City and 14-2 against Shawnee) around a wild 12-8 verdict versus Atoka. Durant then closed the week with losses to Cache (8-0) and Duncan (6-3) in the Duncan Invitational.
That sets up a return home this week for the Annual Durant Tournament at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex beginning on Thursday.
Durant managed only four hits in the Del City romp but capitalized on a whopping 19 free passes in the game that ended in the third inning on the run rule.
Kenzie Trotter had a double and drove in two while Dasia Lewis added a single and two RBI. Harper Plymale and Storm Holmes chipped in runscoring hits as well.
Facing a crucial must-win at Shawnee, the Lady Lions wasted little time taking control with six runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back from there. Korbyn Robinson had the key blow with a two-run triple as Lewis also knocked in a pair of runs with a single.
The same duo led the charge in a three-run second frame outburst as Lewis doubled in one ahead of Robinson’s two-run homer. Durant then finished it up early with a single run in the fourth and four in the fifth stanza.
Emma Sherrer was sensational in the pitching circle with a complete game one-hitter, yielding two unearned runs with three strikeouts.
Robinson finished with three hits and five runs batted in, Lewis contributed two hits and three RBI while Paisley Greenhaw tossed in two doubles and one RBI.
Anslee Morse was swinging the big bat in the Atoka triumph, blasting two home runs as part of her four hits. She drove in five and scored four times. Sherrer chipped in three hits, including a double and homer, with four RBI of her own. Allee Cooper and Lewis added two hits apiece.
Things didn’t go as well in the Cache contest as Durant’s only hit was a Cooper single.
It went a little better against Duncan as they outhit the Lady Demons 10-8 but were slowed by four defensive errors.
Lewis notched the big performance with three hits, including a double, and knocked in two of the three Lady Lion runs. Morse and Greenhaw posted two hits each as Cooper, Trotter and Plymale all contributed one.
