Rep. Cyndi Munson, Democratic candidate for Oklahoma governor, spoke to a standing-room-only crowd recently at Roma Italian Restaurant in Durant.
Her appearance, part of a meetand- greet tour the candidate is making through southern Oklahoma prior to the November 3 election, was sponsored by the Bryan County Democratic Party.
Some attendees, however, selfidentified as registered Republicans or Independents.
In her talk, Munson emphasized her support for public education and affordable medical care.
“We need to raise the pay for both teachers and support staff,” she said. “And we need to help people afford the medical care they and their families need.
“My administration as Governor will work to make people’s lives better in the state of Oklahoma.”
Attendance at the meeting was estimated as between 100 and 150 people.
Munson currently serves as minority leader in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
The first Asian-American woman elected to that body, she has represented the 85h Congressional District (Oklahoma City) since 2015.
Prior to entering politics , she spent several years working in the non-profit community, including Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma and OK Messages Project, a nonprofit working to improve children’s lives through shared reading with their incarcerated parent.
Issues that Munson primarily focuses on include families, education, election reform, juvenile justice form, and Alzheimer’s.
She is originally from Lawton and holds degrees from University of Central Oklahoma and the University of Nebraska.
Munson was introduced at the Roma event by Pat Notley, BCDP chair.
