Senior quarterback Corbin Stoner accounted for a season-high 455 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns to spur the Caddo Bruins to a 62-28 road victory at powerhouse Weleetka last week in a battle of Top 5 ranked foes.
Stoner helped fuel the charge over the final three stanzas as Caddo trailed the Outlaws 16-7 after one quarter before reeling off 20 unanswered points in the second to go in front for good and help the Bruins remain unbeaten at 5-0.
Jake McKay was the top target through the air with a monster receiving game of his own, tallying 10 catches for 273 yards and three scores.
“It was just a huge night for Corbin and Jake both,” head coach Chad Speer commented. “It was great to get Corbin on track in the running game as Bayler (Black) was a little slowed during the week with an injury. It makes it nice with a guy like Jake out wide that can take the top off the defense in order to establish the run game.
“Our offensive line pass protected well. We still had too many pre-snap penalties that have to be corrected but overall I was very pleased with our performance. It was a really fun game to be a part of.”
Corbin’s night included going 15 for 22 through the air for 325 yards and four of the touchdowns, He also ran for 130 yards and four more scores on 16 carries, adding a pair of two-point conversions. Black chipped in a rushing touchdown but ended with only five totes for 15 yards.
In the receiving department, Zander Nabors snagged four passes for 39 yards with Carson Robinson also contributing a 14-yard touchdown catch.
On the defensive side the Bruins slowed down the Outlaws’ highpowered attack, forcing four pivotal turnovers in the process.
“Defensively they presented some challenges,” Speer said. “We stepped up and made plays when we needed to. It was disappointing that we were in position to make a tackle on two big plays they scored on, just couldn’t get them down.
“It was good to go on the road against a ranked opponent and outside of two plays to start the second half played very well defensively. Our offense had a little slow start but ended well and we’ll take that every time. We took advantage of opportunities and the turnovers helped put our offense in position to have success.”
McKay was the team’s leading tackler as well with 19 stops as well as picking off two passes. Black tallied 16 tackles, intercepted a pass and added a pair of sacks. Jase Counce also ended in double figure tackle totals with 13.
The Bruins next begin district play against long-time power Velma-Alma, who has struggled in its return to eight-man football with just 14 total players on the roster. The Comets have not won a game in five non-district contests.
“Velma only has 14 kids out and is kind of down a little for a traditionrich squad,” Speer added. “We are excited about being back home for two of the next three games after four of the non-district on the road. It will be really good for our guys to not have to travel. We feel like we’re going to have the opportunity to get a lot of guys quality playing time this week and the timing works out well to get some extra prep for unbeaten Quinton, which could be for the district championship.”
