Caddo works new system in spring football

A new coach and new system got off to a fast start at Caddo as the Bruins finished up spring football drills last week.

New head coach Chad Speer was extremely excited about what we saw from the returnees as well as several newcomers that will have a great opportunity to step in immediately.

The Bruins spent most of the spring practice with close to 30 players before finishing up with a two-day team camp at Savanna.

“I thought it went really well,” Speer stated. “They got to know me and I got to know them over the course of a couple of weeks. I was very pleased with our numbers. The kids worked hard and picked up the new system pretty well. There was good energy throughout. We got a good foundation set and got to see where we can potentially utilize their strengths to our advantage.

“I couldn’t be more pleased heading into summer pride workouts. We are excited about partnering with C4 in getting bigger, faster and stronger over the summer. We are going to work hard on our speed and agility and continue to get to know each other.”

Speer got a pleasant surprise with the addition of Corbin Stoner and Carson Robinson from basketball after not playing on the gridiron at Caddo previously.

Stoner got quite a few snaps at quarterback and could see time come fall at the signal calling position while Robinson displayed great hands at receiver.

The Bruins will also look to All-State receiver and athletic talent Jake McKay as a possibility at quarterback with returnee Bayler Black spearheading the rushing attack in the backfield.

“We got a couple of basketball kids that will help us a lot,” Speer said. “Our offensive line was a very good surprise. We saw good things from several kids that had not gotten a lot of work before. We definitely have some others that we can potentially work in. I was pleased with our young tight ends and receivers as well.

“Seeing guys compete was the biggest part of the spring. We got reps for a lot of guys so they can understand how we are going to operate. I’m excited about where we stand heading into summer pride. It’s also beneficial for us that the OSSAA is allowing an extra week of practice in the fall. We are looking forward to it.”

Caddo is scheduled to kickoff fall practices on August 3.
