Bokchito teen receives Sheri_’s Commendation Award

A Bokchito teenager who confronted a burglar received a Sheriff’s Commendation Award and was named an honorary sheriff’s deputy by Sheriff Johnny Christian last week.
“Burger” is the Durant Animal Shelter’s Pet of the Week. He is an adorable little puppy. He loves to run around, play and spend time with folks. He is quick with the kisses and is very generous with the a_ection. He has an amazing o_ switch, usually brought on by a full belly. Come on by and check him out. Kingston Town Council voted to open up the application period for a police chief during a meeting June 11. Last month, the council voted to fire Chief Kasey Cox with Vice Mayor Loren Runyan being the only one to oppose the termination.

Swearengin inducted into OPA Quarter Century Club

Durant Democrat editor, writer and photographer Matt Swearengin was inducted into the Oklahoma Press Association’s Quarter Century Club during the recent OPA convention in downtown Oklahoma City. Swearengin has a total of 28 years in the newspaper industry.

June 21-23 The public is invited to view the display of Eucharistic Miracles designed by blessed 15-year-old Carlo Acutis who died from leukemia in 2006. Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtues and proclaimed him to be “Venerable.” The panels will be on display June 21 from 6-9 p.m.
