Poppit is the Durant Animal Shelter’s Pet of the Week. He and his brother were dumped in a local park and a good Samaritan brought them into the police station and Dispatchers watched out for them until animal control officers could bring them to the shelter.

Former police officer sentenced for embezzlement

A former Durant police officer charged in April 2023 with two counts of embezzlement pleaded guilty and was sentenced last week. Forty-eight-year-old Billy Joe Jones of Durant was given a seven-year deferred sentence during the court hearing May 29.

Twins Ava and Gracie Crabtree, daughters of Zach and Valerie Crabtree, graduated from Durant High School on May 16, and they have been described as true miracles. They were born 14 weeks early in 2005.

Southeastern has selected assistant Alan Trayler to be the next head coach of the school’s storied baseball program, replacing Zach Crabtree who stepped down last month to take a job with his alma mater Colbert Public Schools.
