Kingston hires police chief

Kingston Town Council voted to hire Shannon Beshirs as police chief during a special meeting Aug. 16.

All council members voted in favor of hiring Beshirs except Vice Mayor Loren Runyan who abstained from the vote.

The other candidates for the position were, Johnny Miller, Steve Miller and Royce Morris. Steve Miller had been serving as interim chief.

This follows the termination of Police Chief Kasey Cox in May, a vote that was opposed by Runyan.

Also during a recent meeting, the council hired Alyssa Jones as animal control officer.

During the council’s regular meeting Aug. 13 the following agenda items were discussed: - Tabled action on allowing Will Hara to place cement on the road on the west side of his business.

- Took no action from Matthew Magee on grant opportunities.

- Tabled action from Steve Bratcher on Kingston becoming a film-friendly town pending research.

- Tabled action on planning and preliminary design services until the town’s attorney can review the contract.

- Approved a quote to place new flooring in the hallway, restrooms and break room.

- Approved quotes for an animal control facility pad.

- Approved the $60,207.90 final payment for the animal control building.

- Took no action a meeting date for the planning and zoning committee.

- Voted to hire Elleigh Mills as a reserve officer.
