While Caddo head football coach Chad Speer was a little frustrated with the offensive sloppiness of his squad last Friday, he was pleased by the result as the Bruins remained undefeated with a 34-12 road win at Waurika.
The Bruins amassed 351 total yards but turned the ball over once and were guilty of six penalties, five offensively, in addition to a few mishandled snaps.
“We let them hang around longer than we should have,” Speer said of Waurika. “Our defense played great though, especially in the first half. We made some offensive mistakes and couldn’t really get into any rhythm. We kept battling though and had some guys step up and make key plays. I thought the biggest key was we did a really good job of containing their elusive quarterback. Bayler Black and Jake McKay were just all over the place on defense flying to the ball.”
Caddo notched single touchdowns in each of the first two periods to take a 13-0 lead to intermission while throttling the Eagle offense.
Black contributed a defensive score in the third stanza, intercepting a Waurika pass and returning it over 50 yards to paydirt. That helped push the advantage to 27-0 after three frames and the Bruins coasted home from there.
While big plays were the story of earlier games, Caddo had to drive for most of its offensive production against Waurika. Quarterback Corbin Stoner notched season highs with 14 completions on 27 attempts for 175 yards and three scores through the air. McKay also connected on one pass try for 36 yards.
“McKay and Zander Nabors had really solid nights catching the ball,” Speer added. “We probably threw it a little too much for my liking, but a lot of those were just short, quick passes that were just like runs. I would have liked to have seen us run the ball a little better though.”
McKay finished with eight receptions and 98 yards with two of those grabs going for touchdowns. Nabors snagged five passes for 72 yards and Carson Robinson chipped in a 40yard scoring reception.
Black carried the ball 10 times for 94 yards rushing and one touchdown while Stoner tallied 41 yards on 12 totes. Jake McLaughlin also pitched in four rushes for nine yards.
“It was a good win and it was good for us to see some adversity, but we have lots of things to improve on and get cleaned up,” Speer said. “We are still committing too many penalties. We are going to take our time with the bye this week, look at those mistakes and try to improve.
“We are also going to work on a lot of situation stuff this week that we may need to have in the coming weeks and get ready for the next grind of the season. The bye comes at a pretty good time and allows us to spend a little extra time on a really good Weleetka team this week.”
Defensively, Black and McKay had stellar performances for the Bruins with 19 and 18 tackles respectively. Jase Counce had a nice outing as well with 13 stops. R.G. Workman chipped in eight, Cason Hull had seven and Maverick Freeman recorded six in the Caddo victory.
