Mary Perkins celebrates 100th birthday

Mary Perkins turned 100 on January 17, 2026. She celebrated her milestone birthday with an Oklahoma Sooners themed party, fitting for a true OU fan. She remembers some of the earliest OU games and listening to them on the radio.

Food for Thought

I recently listened to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Brooke L. Rollins Secretary, U.S. Department of Agriculture announce their plan to “Make America Healthy Again.” I’ve read the new food guidelines … twice.

Greenland? Seriously?

The latest bee in Trump’s bonnet appears to be taking over Greenland. I say “appears to be” because there is reason to believe he isn’t serious about his professed desire to claim the huge island to our north.

Choctaw Cultural Center wins Indigenous Tourism award

The Choctaw Cultural Center won the 2025 Excellence in Customer Service Award at the Indigenous Tourism Awards ceremony. It was presented recently at the 27th Annual American Indigenous Tourism Conference in Choctaw, Miss.

Benefit to be held for Tammy Ezell

Tammy Ezell was diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer in March 2025. By the time of diagnosis, the cancer had already metastasized into her abdominal wall and throughout her abdomen. She began chemotherapy shortly thereafter.

Jan. 20 The Bryan County Federation of Democratic Women (BCFDW) meeting will be held Tuesday, January 20, at noon at the Donald W Reynolds Library in Durant.

Commissioners table action on burn ban

Bryan County Commissioners Scott Goad, Justin Boone and Brandon Carr voted to table a resolution for a countywide burn ban during a Monday meeting. Calera Fire Chief Brian Norton recommended tabling it for now and addressing it again during the next meeting scheduled for Jan.

Durant Kiwanis Club announces Yuletide Students of the Month

Kiwanis Durant High School December Senior of the Month is Jordan Davenport. Mr. Davenport holds a 3.9 GPA while being concurrently enrolled in college. He has been a two-year member of National Honor Society, Oklahoma Honor Society, and Oklahoma Indian Student Honor Society.
